post resolution

This year I made no resolutions as it struck me that resolution = vow without commitment.
I did feel that 2014 should be a better year than 2013, why, was it the symmetry of the numbers, the absence of unlucky 13 (I hope not, susceptibility to superstitious nonsense would be disappointing) or the fact that each new year brings a chance to reboot - I suspect all of these play a role.
Well I didn't resolve but I have restarted what had been an absolutely catastrophic exercise end of 2013 with no desire and no action combining into a perfect weight gaining state of apathy and indolence.
The theme now is consistency of real exercise - walking the dog does not count, turning up without intent does not count, only a session with sweat does. I do not deny the benefits of regular low level activity - I have no doubt that it is good for you in many ways but, it is not exercise, it is activity. A necessary precursor but not enough on it's own. Thus I have dismantled my dysfunctional tacX virtual reality indoor bike and bought a simple stationary trainer attachment - guess what - it works - much better than spending a frustrating hour trying to get dysfunctional software to let me ride and then, assuming it started, putting in a lackluster performance following the wasted energy of e-frustration. Not only does a simple machine work  but it works even better watching a youtube video of bikers working hard playing in front of me - funnily enough those same bikers help me to row my way through a session. Good guys.
Mostly indoors work right now as it's rather cold most of the time here in Boston and I am definitely a fair weather exerciser, if for no other reason that the salt wreaks havoc on my bike and running is still limited by an iffy achilles. I would like to go out and bask in the light, if not the warmth, of the real sun but the basement makes a suitable alternative. 2014 Ho!!
